Bill's Waffle King
From ClemsonWiki
Bill's Waffle King, also known colloquially as "The Awful Waffle", is a diner located on Mechanic Street on the southwest side of Pendleton about a block east of US 76 "Loc. 1 Block Behind Tri-County Tech". Until the arrival of chain waffle houses on Tiger Boulevard in Clemson in the 1980s, this was usually the most popular choice for late night victuals amongst night owl students and residents. Lee Hall ("the Land of the Midnight Sun") architecture students, campus media staff, and late-night partiers, amongst others, all made the trek to Pendleton.
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the 1970s, the Waffle King now closes overnight.
The business' box advert in the October 1979 Southern Bell yelllow pages states that it offered "carry out orders, short orders", as well as "Fast Service - Quality Food". "Excellent seafood" is mentioned: Flounder, Oysters, Catfish, Shrimp, Deviled Crab. "Steaks our specialty", promised the ad.
