Chanelo's Pizza
From ClemsonWiki
Chanelo's Pizza was a dine-in parlor located between Tiger Town Tavern and Mr. Knickerbockers. The eatery was known locally for it's on-campus delivery service. One of it's more requested sandwiches was called the Versuvian. It consisted of an oblong, baked bun with an elongated ground beef patty covered in shredded lettuce and salad dressing. Opened as a franchise (other college towns including Tallahassee, Auburn, Boone and *koff!* Columbia had them) in the winter of 1975 by Herb Chanell, he closed the Clemson store in the early 90's when he began having health problems. His daughter operates a Chanelo's in Pickens using the same family recipes. Herb's store slogan was "Nothing Beats a Pizza from Chanelo's". A new Chanelo's location reopened on Highway 93 in 2006. However, with a remote location in the now defunct Winn-Dixie shopping center, coupled with too much competition, the new Chanelo's closed in the summer of 2007 and the restaurant is up for sale as of early September.
Herb Chanell's daughter still operates a Chanelo's in Pickens - closed on Mondays.
Trivia
Back in the day, Chanelo's delivery personnel were quite well aware of the dorm locations of all the "party" crowds, and were not infrequently tipped a bong hit. After all, they were greeted as a friend bringing munchies.
A small controversy ensued in the winter of 1975 as the university tried to accommodate changing trends relating to businesses selling on campus when Chanelo's began delivering. An October 1972 policy required enterprises to seek written approval from the Office of Student Affairs.
