Arthur Pelzer Gandy, of Dovesville, South Carolina, was a member of the Clemson Class of 1914, in Agronomy. He was elected Team Captain for the football team his Senior year.

While a Cadet, Gandy played on the Varsity Football Team, (1910, 1912-1914, serving as Captain the final year; Track Team; Coach, Sophomore Class Teams, (1913, 1914), Champions, (1914); Corresponding Secretary, Vice-President, Columbian Literary Society; Circulating Manager of the Chronicle; Block "C" Club; Agricultural Society; Y. M. C. A.; Secretary and Treasurer of the Junior Class; Junior, Senior Dancing Clubs; Agricultural Straights and "Firm."

The 1914 TAPS, Volume Seven, Senior blurb about him: " 'Hop' and 'Action' both come from the lore of football tradition. Ancient history does not relate when this remarkable warrior began his football career. This handsome fellow has been mistaken for an Apollo, an original American, and a husband; so his apparent qualities are manifold as to be quite misleading. What 'Hop' doesn't know, one will never know that he doesn't know. To 'What Hop Gandy says,' the world lends a listening ear." (Page unnumbered.)
