Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative, Inc. is a customer owned, not-for-profit electric distribution utility that serves 55,000 customers in the upstate of South Carolina. Headquartered in Pickens, South Carolina, the co-op provides electric service to portions of Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg counties. To better serve its customers, the co-op maintains three offices in addition to its Pickens location. These are located in Westminster, Anderson and Travelers Rest. There are 20 distribution cooperatives in the state. Blue Ridge is the second largest. Together these 20 cooperatives serve more than 500,000 members in over 70 percent of the state.

Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative was organized on August 14, 1940. The cooperative started operations with 1,680 customers inherited from the old South Carolina Rural Electrification Authority. At the time Blue Ridge was established, only 2 percent of South Carolina farms had central-station power, verses 100 percent today. Presently, Blue Ridge serves about 55,000 customers over nearly 6,000 miles of power line. The cooperative currently has about 160 employees and also utilizes a number of contract crews in its line construction and maintenance programs. Another 50 employees work in the Blue Ridge Security Systems organization.

As a customer-owned utility, Blue Ridge places a premium on providing dependable service to its customers. Every aspect of the cooperative's operation is customer-driven, as opposed to profit-driven. Cutting-edge technology is applied throughout the Blue Ridge business, but the human touch at Blue Ridge ensures that the customer receives the highest priority. That is the philosophy of a cooperative organization. Blue Ridge endeavors to operate to the fullest extent possible in accordance with those cooperative principles.
