James C. Cook III, generally known as J. C. Cook, is a Clemson native, former Clemson University student, and long-time local businessman. In the wake of the death of Clemson Mayor Larry Abernathy on February 11, 2012, Cook was elected to take Abernathy's place as mayor.

Background

J. C. Cook is married to Nancy G. Cook and has two daughters and three grandchildren. He attended Clemson after graduating from Daniel High School. His father was a professor of mechanical engineering at Clemson.

In 1978, Cook was one of the four founding owners of Tiger Town Tavern on College Avenue in Clemson. He retired from the business at the end of 2007.

Cook is the second most senior member of the Clemson City Council. He served from 1996 to 2000 and was elected again in 2004.The council consists of six council seats plus the mayor. A city administrator runs the city's day to day business.

"Besides serving on the council, Cook spent seven years on the city's architectural review board. He is best known in town for having owned the Tiger Town Tavern for 30 years, though he's also owned other businesses and helped his brother in various building projects." Cook announced his intention to seek the mayor's job at the Clemson City Council meeting on Monday, February 20, 2012.
