James Copenhaver served as Interim Director of Bands from 1971-1973, while Bruce F. Cook pursued his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at UT-Austin.

Copenhaver received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music Education at Morehead State University, and taught at Holmes High School and Morehead State prior to coming to Clemson. After leaving Clemson, he served at Florida State University for four years before assuming his present position as Director of Bands at the University of South Carolina in 1976. He is best known for his introduction of "Sock it to Em" (the "Orange Bowl March") to the Tiger faithful during his time here.

Dr. Copenhaver was also responsible for the changeover from a military color guard to the flag line that we are familiar with today. Flag Corps members once carried the ACC school flags on the field.
