James Henry (Sonny) Crawford Sr., Professor Emeritus

James Henry (Sonny) Crawford Sr., retired horticulture professor, died July 15, 2010 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Among his accomplishments was helping create the Horticultural Gardens (now part of the South Carolina Botanical Garden) on a site that had formerly been a debris dump. He was an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman and a devoted fan of Clemson athletics.

Crawford was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Martin Crawford. He is survived by sons James H. (Jim) Crawford Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Anderson; and David C. (Dedo) Crawford of the home.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central. Burial followed in Memory Gardens.
