What to say about McDonald's? The original McDonald brothers had a drive-in on E Street in San Bernardino, California, close by Route 66 in the 1950s and hit upon the formula of quick burgers, fries, and milk shakes. The had a high demand for shake production and ordered a group of multi-spindle machines from a distributor named Ray Kroc. When Kroc saw what the McDonald boys had hit upon, he prevailed upon them to sell him the name and franchising rights. The first "chain" McDonald's opened in Des Plaines, Illinois on April 15, 1955 and you know the rest. "Over 600 million - zillion - trillion sold." The original McDonald's on E Street in "San Berdoo" was torn down around 1969 after sitting derelict for several years.

"Mickey D's" built their Clemson location out on the U.S. 123 By-Pass, now Tiger Boulevard, in 1976. As of January 2010, McDonald's no longer takes Tiger Stripe.

  • NBC Today Show weatherman and Golden Anniversary recognizer, Willard Scott was the original Ronald McDonald clown character, developed in the Washington, D.C. broadcast market in the early 1960s.

Sources - Thanks to Daddy staying in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Clemson in 1949, this military brat lived in the Nation's Capital from 1963 to 1968 and saw Willard's adverts as Ronald McDonald, and then moved to Southern California and saw the original McDonald's before it was razed.
