Paul Thomas Brodie

Paul Thomas Brodie (January 11, 1866-November 3, 1907) was a Professor of Mathematics and Civil Engineering at Clemson Agricultural College, December 1895 to November 1907. He held B. S. and A. B. degrees from Furman University.

Paul Thomas Brodie was born near Leesville, South Carolina on January 11, 1866. He was prepared for college at Stuart's Classical School of Charleston; graduated from Furman University in 1887, having devoted special attention to mathematics under the noted Dr. C. H. Judson; began at once the work of teaching, having been Superintendent of Lewiedale, Lexington and Spartanburg High Schools, respectively; spent vacation in post-graduate work in the higher universities. In February 1895, elected Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Clemson Agricultural College. On the establishment of Civil Engineering course in 1897, it was placed in his charge. In 1899, was made head of the Department of Mathematics. Prof. Brodie was engineer in charge of the Lexington Water Power development and has done other engineer work of merit. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. (The Oconeean 1904, Volume II, page 16.)

Page 97 of the 1908 TAPS, Volume Number One, is dedicated to the late Professor Brodie, and features a formal portrait of the spectacle-wearing gentleman with a full beard and moustache.
