Almost a shame to write a piece on the Phantom Lot, and destroy its enigma...
The Phantom Lot was the parking lot that didn't officially exist next to the Loggia and B-Section of Johnstone Hall, a former true parking area in the days before a pedestrian campus center was instituted from the mid-1970s. Recall, student vehicles on campus were much restricted through the early 1970s, with only upperclassmen permitted to have them.
The Phantom Lot remained paved, however, as it was used on occasion for university service deliveries to the Union complex. This provided the added benefit of stealth parking close in to the campus area bounded by Johnstone, Tillman Hall, Brackett Hall, Hardin Hall and the Trustee House. It was finally removed when Cox Plaza was created.
