Rat Hop

The Rat Hop was a set of two dances, sponsored by Central Dance Association, usually on the Friday and Saturday night of the first home football game in September. TAPS articles emphasized that this was the first opportunity of shaved-heads Rats to bring their girls into campus to share their new collegiate experience. In the era of Clemson's military / post-military cadre traditions, the Friday night night dance was a Formal dance night and Saturday was an Informal dance. The last mandantory freshman Rat class matriculated in 1969. The distinction of formal dress codes was discontinued circa 1971 as students rebelled as the military traditions were dropped after the discontinuance of formal Rat Season.
