Events on September 2 in Clemson's History

  • 1970: Dean Walter T. Cox, dean of Student Affairs, reveals that 7,200 copies of the Spring 1970 issue of The Chronicle have been destroyed for having "obscene" content.
  • 1971: Pep rally held in the Amphitheatre with a "hot pants contest for University women" (The Tiger, August 27, 1971, page 6).
  • 1992: Tiger Town Tavern celebrates its fifteenth anniversary. De Collard Peoples are the featured band.
  • September 2, 1992-September 5, 1992: Two hundred of the 15,000 panels of the AIDS memorial quilt are displayed in the Palmetto Ballroom. Each 3 X 6 foot panel represents one death caused by the disease and is designed as a tribute to an individual.   • 2005 - The First Friday Parade is interrupted when an elementary school girl, daughter of the former principal of Morrison Elementary School, is accidentally run over by a float while trying to retrieve bottled water distributed from the parade display. Medevac helicoptered out from Bowman Field, she makes a remarkably quick recovery from bruised ribs, a detached lung, other injuries.
  • 2006: Clemson opens against first time opponent, Florida Atlantic University, and wins, 54-6. Of course, this game had the largest margins of the weekend, with Clemson favored by 32, and 44 1/2 on the over/under. The Tigers cleared both limits.
  • 2007: The First Friday parade moves to First Sunday, as Clemson opens against Florida State in Death Valley on Labor Day night, nationally televised on ESPN. The parade begins at 5 p.m. and the theme of the parade is "Reigning Over the Sunshine State." Clemson will go coastal with beach music at Tiger Shag 2007. The show will feature General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, the East Coast Band and the Out of Towners playing classic beach music. There will be games, prizes, rides, food and beverage and music. Gates will open at 2 p.m., and the show will begin at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and are now on sale at the Littlejohn Coliseum box office, at TicketMaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets the day of the show will be $15. The first 500 people to buy tickets for Tiger Shag at the Littlejohn box office will receive a free Tiger Shag T-shirt. Lawn chairs and blankets are permitted at both shows, but coolers and outside food and drinks are not allowed. The Greenville News reports this date that former Clemson defensive backs C.J. Gaddis, Duane Coleman and Jamaal Fudge were among cuts by the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively. Also former Clemson linebacker John Leake was cut by the Atlanta Falcons. (Page 2C).
  • September 2, 2009-September 3, 2009: Alpha Phi Omega sponsors the First Friday Blood Drive in the Hendrix Student Center Ballroom, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
