This is great Victor. Congratulations on another successful project. --Darvian 09:10, 26 Apr 2005 (EDT)

Thanks for your suggestion on my pictures Vic, I noticed the blurryness and lines on the pics, but I didn't know how to fix it. The reason I resized the photos is that a warning page comes up asking me to keep my photo size under 100kb. I was worried about taking up too much space on the server, as my full images are usually around 400kb to 500kb. I can re-upload the pictures tonight and tomorrow, and use the thumbs on the pages to limit the size and load time. Any other suggestions? --Jeff The Great

Yea, but this way it shows up in Recent Changes and let's everyone know I'm the man... ;) j/k, -3toes

Thanks for getting us back up and running Vic. --Darvian

[edit] You're Welcome

Your contributions are tremendously appreciated! You seem to have a lot of experience working over at the Wikipedia, and we're mainly just amateurs. If you've got some ideas as to how we can improve architectually, feel free to improve upon our work. Thanks for joining.

If you're bored, be sure to join ClemsonTALK too. - Victor 21:17, 1 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Thanks, I appreciate it. I only have been over at Wikipedia for about two months, but it's been a great learning project! As far as architectually, I'd suggest a place to organize work on the Wiki, similar to the WikiProjects over on Wikipedia. I noticed that there is a Project:Administrators, which implies that Projects would be its own Namespace, but I think you could do something like ClemsonWiki:Project Professors, which would be a project about adding information about professors. Why not start with ClemsonWiki:Project Clemson, and have that be the main Project page, and all other project pages be children of that one? That would be a central place to discuss changes, and list tasks that need doing. I can go ahead and work on setting that up, if you'd like. Evilphoenix 23:18, 1 Aug 2005 (EDT)

[edit] ClemsonWiki:Project_Clemson

Ok I started up the Project page. It's still pretty new, but perhaps it will be useful. Check it out and let me know what you think. Evilphoenix 23:39, 6 Aug 2005 (EDT)

[edit] downtime

Seemed like the site had some downtime today? Evilphoenix 22:41, 20 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Yeah, I'm not sure what happened. At first I thought it was the datacenter's problem, but I finally got them to reboot my server and everything seems ok now.

[edit] naming conventions

Yes, it's by typing the name is with the category. for example, In the Eddie Smith article, it should say [[Category:Professors|Smith]]. This sorts the entry under "smith" in the category page, instead of Eddie. I've hit most of the ones in the Category:Professors category, but I the ones in PoliSci professors still need sorting. [edit] The Almond

I saw there was some mention of the Almond on ClemsonTalk. I used to write for them, and I've done some work for them. Just to mention. Also, it might be nice to go ahead and delete the editors picture from the thread, theyre trying to keep the staff kind of anonymous. Evilphoenix 22:20, 11 Sep 2005 (EDT)

[edit] Hello again

Hello sir, I decided to stop in after a break from ClemsonWiki. I see the site is under attack from spambots, so I'll try to keep a closer eye on things around here to help with that. I'd like to encourage you to enable e-mail in your preferences, that would make getting in touch with you a little easier. Second, I'd like to suggest that you upgrade your MediaWiki version, the newer version has a handy little "Block this user" button when you visit User and Talk pages, and that would make blocking a little bit faster. Hope you're doing well. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 22:24, 19 December 2005 (EST)

[edit] ClemsonWiki:Spam attacks

I've created this page to try and keep better track of this new Spambot. If we're lucky, we might be able to get some clues by studying the IP ranges it's coming from as to determine where its coming in from. Just thought I'd point you this way. Also, I noticed that if I do a search for a page that's not there, the link that should be there to let me create the page is broken. Is that on purpose? [edit] Purging

So remember how you and others always had to keep editing the Main Page to force it to update sometimes? That's because of a little feature of MediaWiki that sometimes things don't always update to the page cache. Well I did a little noodling around on Wikipedia and came up with my new friend the Purge button. There's another copy living on Talk:Main Page. Hit that, and bam, the Main Page will be re-rendered, and everything will be updated. You can also use the Template for other pages, by typing in {{Purge|PageName}} where PageName is the name of whatever you want to purge. I had to do some fiddling with the Template though because you're not running the same version as Wikipedia of MediaWiki. I don't know how hard this would be to do, but if you could consider upgrading to the latest MediaWiki, that would be really helpful, especially with some of the Templates I'm modifying from Wikipedia and creating...it's more challenging not having access to all the same variables that the more recent versions have, so I end up having to dig back through the archives of old versions of Wikipedia Templates to try to find example code that will work with an older version. Cheers! Ëvilphoenix Burn! 22:46, 3 April 2006 (EDT)

Cool, thanks for the new feature. I think some of the Special:Allmessages are no longer the same as defaulted on the latest version of MediaWiki. Would resetting them to default to match MediaWiki mess up anything you've done? Victor 21:18, 11 April 2006 (EDT)
I don't think so. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 21:19, 11 April 2006 (EDT)

[edit] Killin time

I think I figured it out. Killin time is actually User:Jeff The Great. Or rather, User:Jeff The Great is actually User:Killin time. I guess in his signature or his options or something he put "Killin time", and somehow the software has attributed his logged actions to Killin time but some other edits to User:Jeff The Great, which is not an actual username (there's no contribs). If you look at Killin time's logs, theres a bunch of image uploads, which when you look at the image file itself are attributed to Jeff the Great. I think what's happening with the IP block is that it could be that Jeff's old blocks are kicking in on someone new. I unblocked the accounts in question, if there's any more problems we can re-block them but for now we can try and see if that works out. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 11:33, 11 April 2006 (EDT)

[edit] I'm not calling you a dumbass :-)

Don't take the comments in the move log personally, I thought it was me that had moved it to Cheap seats, so that comment wasn't actually aimed at you. Then I realized it was you (hah hah), but then I was like well I guess now I sound like an asshole in the move log. Cheers! Ëvilphoenix Burn! 14:45, 18 April 2006 (EDT)

Haha.. yeah right! Nice cover. Victor 15:02, 20 April 2006 (EDT)

[edit] Spam, vandalism

Hey, Victor!

We seem to be under a 48-hour spam attack. Is there a way to temporarily restrict editing to registered users?

[edit] Went to the D.C. Wiki meet on Saturday

Hey, dude!

I went down to Union Station and met upwards of two dozen other regional Wikipedians at Uno's Pizza last Saturday. A very interesting get-together! We even had a vice counsel there! Neat to meet faces behind the anonymous editing identities! Afterwards, about half adjourned for further "session" at the Brickskeller on 23rd Street, NW, where they purvey about a thousand beers.

When I told them that the stand-alone ClemsonWiki is averaging about 325 hits a week, they seemed impressed. If we could link more often inside the main Wiki, I bet we'd get even better counts!

The meeting adjourned about 10:30 p.m.

[edit] Inquiry from NDSU

Victor - I received the following from Brian at NDSU. I really don't know that much about the structure of the Clemson Wiki... Perhaps you might wish to respond to the gentleman's inquiry.

  • == Wiki project at another university ==

Hello,

I am not sure if you are the best person to contact or not, but if not can you please let me know who I should contact. Anyway, if you dont mind I was hoping I could ask you a few questions:

I am thinking about building a wiki for the university I attend (North Dakota State University) and I was wondering if you could provide me any insight as to how you went about building ClemsonWiki.

I am looking for any information that you can provide that will help me through the process of building one. Any information is useful but the following would be especially useful: general startup tips, server requirements, any customizations (extensions, categories, special pages etc. ) you recommend, general policies you implement, how you keep the wiki active and spam free, etc.

I am hoping you can provide any information as I have enjoyed looking through the ClemsonWiki and noticed it has many great things to offer.

Please either respond on my talk page or send an email to ndstate-bison [at] yahoo dot com

Thank you --Brian.F 01:54, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
