  • February 10: Richard W. Simpson, future first chairman of the Clemson College Board of Trustees, marries Miss Maria Louise Garlington of Laurens County, South Carolina.
  • May 10: Confederate General Thomas Jonathon "Stonewall" Jackson dies eight days after having been shot three times by the 18th North Carolina Infantry, who mistook Jackson's dusk patrol after the Battle of Chancellorsville for a Union cavalry force. With his death, ended the friendship with Major Mark Bernard Hardin.
  • September 14: Richard Newman Brackett, Ph.D., born this date. Served as an associate professor of Chemistry at Clemson Agricultural College until his death on November 27, 1937.
