Anderson is a moderately sized town about 15 minutes from campus. Head southwest on US 76, cross I-85 and you're there. It's home to Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Office Depot, Lowes, Home Depot, and the standard array of restaurants including, Outback, Hooters, Olive Garden, and O'Charley's.

There's actually a lot more to the town than the main strip. The "downtown" area, as it is, can be very nice in places. Many Clemson students attend New Spring, also in Anderson.

Anderson was incorporated by an act of Legislature, December 19, 1833 as Anderson Court House, a name it retained for 50 years. (Klosky, Beth Ann, "Six Miles That Changed The Course of The South", The Electric City Centennial Committee, Electric City Printing, Anderson, South Carolina, 1995, no ISBN, page 19.)It is known as "The Electric City" due to its having been the earliest city in the south to have electric power, thanks to a hydroelectric powerplant located atPortman Shoals on the Seneca River, erected in 1897. ("South Carolina-The WPA Guide to the Palmetto State", 1941, University of South Carolina Press, 1988, Second printing, 1992, page 166, ISBN 0-87249-603-1.) The original powerhouse site is now under the waters of Lake Hartwell. The city is named for General Robert Anderson.

As of 1995, the City of Anderson had a combined population (urban and suburban) of approximately 75,000. (Klosky, Beth Ann, "Six Miles That Changed The Course of The South", The Electric City Centennial Committee, Electric City Printing, Anderson, South Carolina, 1995, no ISBN, page 15.)
