Nice work adding the stuff on Frank Howard! Keep up the good work. Evilphoenix 04:01, 8 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Years

It's funny how you and I seem to edit at the same time of day. Thanks for adding stuff to the years sections. I'm generally trying to keep stuff within each specific year in that year's article, and put general decade stuff in the decades article. See my example year article at User:Evilphoenix/years. Cheers, Evilphoenix 02:13, 17 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Yuh - I was always a night owl. I used to type my term papers in one overnight sitting in the Tiger or TAPS office - one draft, sources fanned out around the Selectric IIs then the state of the art standard machine... Campus media budgets supported a lot of personal typing back in the day... We used to type all out newspaper and annual stories on endless rolls of copy paper... Many was the time that I watched the sun come up from the 9th level of Johnstone as I counted out the fourteenth or fifteenth page of my term papers. And Tiger was still laying out the paper with hard copy and hot wax on dummy pages... How far we have come!

I have such extensive Clemson archives (every copy of the Tiger between 1974 and 1980, for instance, plus all the annuals, 1974-82, that I can support this Wiki project pretty much indefinitely. And that doesn't even touch the thousands of slides and negatives I shot over the years...

Mark (or "Sub*", as I signed my cartoons and art in the media...)

So would you mind adding information about individual years to the articles about the years themselves, and not the decades articles, please? In some cases you're adding information to the decades articles that's already in the Year article. Evilphoenix 11:39, 17 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Oh, so you don't want the years timeline in the decade page? - I should drop the data down into the individual year? I can move the stuff already there if you want me to...

Sub*

{{Year}}

If you type {{subst:Year}} on new year articles, then hit save, then edit what the template generates, that would be cool. Carry on dude. Evilphoenix 01:54, 21 Aug 2005 (EDT)

'Recent Changes' commentary

When making changes, how about commenting on what you're changing, rather than an offbeat comment that doesn't describe anything? (e.g. 1975 - "Mein Fuhrer - I can WALK!!")

It's nice to follow the pages and see what's been added, and the comment line helps to identify that.

Spam bots

Mark, You're a sysop, so feel free to ban any of the spam bots when you see them. Thanks for all your work.

Quote on my page

What't with the Dr. Strangelove quote on my page? Evilphoenix 22:14, 19 December 2005 (EST)

Strangelove issues

Allow me to clear up the Strangelove thing - I made the original comment about those article changes, Mark, and I thought the CW would at the very least add my username at the end of the line. It didn't. Sorry for the confusion. -fowlerj

Abbreviations

Thanks for pointing those acronyms out - I'll expand them. I suppose I wasn't paying attention to the obvious. -fowlerj

Just realized

Mark, I just connected you with the "Mark Sublette" on my memorial page for Fred Shilstone. I was emailing it to an old classmate and noticed that someone else has recently added to it, then I noticed your name again and realized I've corresponded (sort of) with you before. Thanks for adding your words on that page. It means a lot. Fred's sister is keeping an eye on it and sincerely appreciates each addition. -fowlerj

Chicago

Chicago performed in Littlejohn in the early 70s...my dad remembers them being here but I can't get an exact date without going through old TAPS issues. I figure The Tiger would have done a nice feature on that. That said, you're the person to ask.

Also, I checked the ADN thing, but there is a explanation before the acronym in 1965. Is there one I missed? -fowlerj

Personal Accounts

The reason I've been removing the personal accounts is that they really seem out of place in the articles. Sure with you being the one to experience them they make perfect sense to you, but when I read the articles the anecdotes are just jarring and conflict with the objective flow of the article. If you want to add the anecdotes to the respective disscussion pages then that's fine, but usually it's in bad taste to reference yourself in an article. See: Adding to ClemsonWiki#Don't Mix Personal Opinion with Fact --TheKoG 15:31, 26 January 2006 (EST)

Okay - - - point taken...
Perhaps we should have a file for the more personal accounts...
Yeah, if you want to go ahead and make an article that's something like "Personal Anecdotes at Clemson" or "List of Personal Experiences", something like that, then that might be ok. Each section of the article could just be one of the ClemsonWiki article titles with a link to the article itself and then users can just add their own stories there in a bullet list. An example might be:
==Tiger Town Tavern==
* stuff happened --User1
* other stuff --User2
==Death Valley==
* crazy stuff --User2
--TheKoG 15:47, 26 January 2006 (EST)

Chicago date/place

I have a date: Jan 23, 1971 in Littlejohn. Came from my Carnegie Hall box set, and my dad confirmed it. - fowlerj

Ooh, I love Chicago. Make Me Smile is a great song. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 00:00, 4 April 2006 (EDT)

--- Yeah, I keep the c.d. for Chicago 1 in the player in my car! Love those brass arrangements! This, coming from a six-year Tiger Band brass player!

April 2

Oh Now you tell me! Here and I'm going through trying to find stuff for the April Days!

Seriously though, I wanted to message you and say I think it's good you're putting in so much information about history stuff. I think you and I make a good pair...you're really good at finding material to add, and I'm good with wikis and layout and stuff, and making it all work. I suppose you might have noticed that now that youve managed to make so many good Year articles, I've started making actual Day articles too! I think it's fun to see what all happened on a given day. I'm also going to start a new feature on the Main Page that has stuff that happened on each given day in Clemson history, which is why ive been focusing so much on April stuff lately, cause I'm trying to get stuff prepped for the Main Page. I suppose you might have noticed what I've been up to with the Main Page, but again with that, most of what's going up there now is a lot of your work, so congratulations on that, and I wanted to mention I appreciate what you're doing. Kudos. I'm going to be making a list soon of types of articles I want to add...things that I think are sort of basic information that needs to be in place in a Wiki infrastructure (for example, a Year and Day system, which is coming along very nicely). I'll let you know about that list and ask for your input on it once I've gotten it live. Perhaps it can help you think of stuff to find information for, etc. Also, I noticed you started linking days in when you've been adding stuff, thanks, as one of the first steps I have to do is go through and create wikilinks for all the different day listings on the Year pages before I can make the actual Day articles. So if you're going along and want to help by just bracketing the date names on stuff as you go, that's something that would be a big help....no biggie, just mentioning it. Thanks for your comments on the USC Talk page over on the big Wiki...I'd appreciate if you'd help me keep an eye on the article. One of the anons removed the overall record again, and I havent wanted to put it back myself. Anywho, hope you're well. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 23:57, 3 April 2006 (EDT)

Tates Locke and other upcoming fun

Hey I don't know if you'll get a chance, but Tates Locke will be mentioned in the On This Day feature tomorrow, along with Bill McClellan. If you could get a chance to write something real quick about either of those guys, so that there's not a red link, I'd really appreciate it. Here's some links to upcoming History day features, if you'd like to be able to see what else is coming up soon, for your convenience:

  • ClemsonWiki:Selected anniversaries/April 22
  • ClemsonWiki:Selected anniversaries/April 23
  • ClemsonWiki:Selected anniversaries/April 24
  • ClemsonWiki:Selected anniversaries/April 25
  • ClemsonWiki:Selected anniversaries/April 26

They'll fill in blue as I get to each day. Thanks a ton!

Ps I'd love to know what the Bengal Ball is or where Y Beach is, thanks a ton!

Ëvilphoenix Burn! 01:36, 21 April 2006 (EDT)

Thanks for the welcome

Mark,

I'd like to focus my contributions on the Football side of things maybe with some other stuff interspersed. Since I'm not a resident or an alumni of Clemson I'm sure you and other users would be more in touch to that stuff. I love the site.

Florida Fan

Mark,

I'm from St. Petersburg, FL and was in the AF from 91-95. My last assignment was at Hurlburt Field in Ft. Walton Beach. When in Clemson I make a point to go by Mac's for some good eats and TTT for cold refreshment.

My email is [email protected], thanks for the advice on date stamping and brackets. I'm pretty edit challenged and I'm trying to pick up tricks as I see them to make my contributions more smooth looking. Nate stipe 00:10, 28 May 2006 (EDT)

picture problems

Mark,

I've tried to insert some pictures into various entries and sometimes I get lucky and they go and other times they don't. I get a file is corrupted or something like that. I notice that sometimes the image says .bmp when I save it and I'm using the .jpg instructions. Could that be the problem? I'm not tech savvy at all. Any advice? Nate Nate stipe 10:02, 29 May 2006 (EDT)

Fuller bio etc

I created a Steve Fuller bio per your request, good suggestion. I'm going to work on Wayne Simmons next.

Cheek vs. Cheeks

Mark, Do you have any 1981 era student guides that could clarify if Randy Cheek is the correct name or Randy Cheeks. I show a reference to Cheek but the city that he is the mayor of has him listed as Cheeks.

Six Mile Cheeks

Thanks! I thought so. ztmauldin entered the article on Clemsonwiki as cheek, but when I Googled Six Mile to verify, the town lists Randy Cheeks...? Maybe the town is wrong? How many Randy Cheek/Cheeks can there be?

Sorry, keep forgeting the squggle lines Nate stipe 21:47, 1 June 2006 (EDT)

How to make a Day

Hey I noticed your making Day pages. Rock on. I created a handy template for that, {{Day}}. You use it by going to the Day you want to create, and typing the following: {{subst:Day|November|3}}, which would be what you'd use for November 3rd. The just hit save, and the template will automagically create the basic Day page for you. It also calls up the {{Calendar}} for the given month, which I've implemented through June and I think July, I'll get to the later ones, well, later. But the {{Daybox}} template is deprecated now, so I'd rather just use the calendar. Hope that helps! Ëvilphoenix Burn! 00:46, 2 June 2006 (EDT)

Awesome Choice!

Mark,

Great choice. Obed has had a colorful life. I'll start on it soon. Nate 14:06, 6 June 2006 (EDT)

Brackets

Mark, I see that you added brackets to football that was already bracketed in the article "24". What is the standard way to bracket for this site? I was under the impression that if a word was bracketed already that there was no reason to keep bracketing the same word in the article. Any help would be appreciated. Nate stipe 07:56, 16 June 2006 (EDT)

Eh, it's pretty much whatever. Generally you dont have to keep bracketing something once it's been bracketed, but if it is, it's not a huge deal either. Basically you just edit it how you see fit. :-) Nice work, btw. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 16:28, 16 June 2006 (EDT)

Re:nate

Yes, Nate's doing a great job, and I'm glad he's come on board. I disagree though about needing another sysop. There's a difference between contributing and administrating, both in functions and qualities needed on a Wiki. The fact is, right now we don't really need another sysop... there's just not that much sysop function stuff that needs doing...we don't have that much that needs deleting, we dont at this time have a big issue with vandalism, so theres not much blocking to be done. Nor do we really have arguments flaring over content, so we dont need pages protected. What really would be helpful would be more help keeping up with the Mainpage, or if Nate wanted to do a sort of Athletics portal, that might be a sort of gateway to an Athletics section, but if he wants to just crank on with adding football related content, thats fine too. Does that all make sense? Ëvilphoenix Burn! 16:20, 16 June 2006 (EDT)

Road trip

Howdy guys -

I will be road tripping to the Florida west Panhandle for a family reunion this weekend, followed by a wedding in Atlanta the following Saturday, so I won't be editing during this period.

oconee/pickens shift

Hey Mark, I finally got a reliable source for the date clemson went from oconee to pickens: feb 20, 1967. i added it to a few articles.

Google account?

Mark - Glad to hear about the wikipedians meetup. When I get back to the States in a year or two, maybe we'll have a chance to meet up. In the meantime, do you have a google account? I can add you to the google analytics access page if you do, so that you can view CW statistics. - Victor 15:51, 24 July 2007 (EDT)

Recent edits

Thanks, I saw the item and thought it should be updated. I am a volunteer with the Arts Center, and photographed the art that will be auctioned. I am also a professor (industrial engineering) at Clemson who has an interest in Clemson, photography, and history. I have done just a few minor contributions at wikipedia, but none here until today. I expect I will hang around as I have time (I don't retire until next spring) and learn the system.

Thanks

Mark, thanks very much. Glad you are going to get notices from the Arts Center. This is a nice resource for the city and university as well. And thanks for the welcome to this wiki.

Wiki project at another university

Hello,

I am not sure if you are the best person to contact or not, but if not can you please let me know who I should contact. Anyway, if you dont mind I was hoping I could ask you a few questions:

I am thinking about building a wiki for the university I attend (North Dakota State University) and I was wondering if you could provide me any insight as to how you went about building ClemsonWiki.

I am looking for any information that you can provide that will help me through the process of building one. Any information is useful but the following would be especially useful: general startup tips, server requirements, any customizations (extensions, categories, special pages etc. ) you recommend, general policies you implement, how you keep the wiki active and spam free, etc.

I am hoping you can provide any information as I have enjoyed looking through the ClemsonWiki and noticed it has many great things to offer.

Please either respond on my talk page or send an email to ndstate-bison [at] yahoo dot com

Thank you --Brian.F 01:54, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

Hello,
Thank you for your reply (sorry it took so long for me to reply, I have been lost in work). I appreciate you help.
Thanks again, --Brian.F 23:17, 28 November 2007 (EST)

Hello, we are starting up a wiki project at the University of Kansas. Our site is connectku.com/wiki. We just launched it Sunday, and I found this site while looking for other university wiki projects. I have so many questions but don't know which one to ask first. My username over there is JackConnor1. Please feel free to browse our site and let me know what you think.

Thanks Jack

Response to Jack from KU

I hope you check this column - I need you to leave your exact web http - I tried linking to connectku.com/wiki through several engines, and they all gave me non-recognition responses. Mark* C. Mark Sublette 19:30, 30 January 2008 (EST)C.Mark SubletteC. Mark Sublette 19:30, 30 January 2008 (EST)

Jack response

Mark,

Thanks for stopping by our site- sorry for the confusion about the web site. I appreciate your input. One thing we anticipate is an organizational nightmare if we don't structure the site soon. How did you guys go about categorizing all the articles at first? We just went "live" on Sunday, but due to local media coverage, the site has exploded in the last couple of days. We just hope to keep up with everything. And thanks for the tip about linking everything.

Jack

WiKUpedia down for a bit

Mark,

We're changing servers and adding some domain names, but we'll be back shortly, better than ever. Thanks for all your help so far.

--JackConnor1 14:26, 22 May 2008 (EDT)

We're back! KUpedia.org

Glad to help out

I've been following CW since the beginning, I just get in the spirit of contributing once in a while. It seemed like most of what I would add was already here, until I thought about activities in nearby towns. By the way, is there any way to make it so I don't have to fill out the captcha every time I edit? Harksaw 09:52, 26 February 2009 (EST)

Hey Mark

I made Harksaw a sysop and made you a bureaucrat, which I think means that you should be able to grant sysop privileges. Thanks again, for all of your work! - Victor 11:26, 1 March 2009 (EST)

Lightsey

We had a Lightsey II article, and we had a Lightsey Bridge article (which I thought was for the bridge, not the apartments with the same name - looks like you're right) Harksaw 16:24, 2 March 2009 (EST)

Spam bots again

Is there something we can do about the spam bots? I presume they've cracked the CAPTCHA. I was thinking maybe we could have a question on login like "What is the name of the lake near Clemson?" and allow mods such as you and I to change the question as necessary. I've tried asking Victor on CT but have gotten no response. Harksaw 03:53, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

I'll probably have to call him directly. I made the same suggestion at Xmas when we last spoke vox. Sub* 03:57, 14 April 2012 (UTC)C. Mark SubletteSub* 03:57, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Some house cleaning today

Hey Mark - I did a few upgrades to CW today:

  1. Moved CW to a new server
  2. Upgraded MediaWiki to latest version
  3. Installed a new plugin that asks questions instead of just the ReCaptcha, which the spam bots apparently have defeated. The new plugin asks a question when someone makes an edit that contains a URL. I think that in itself should solve a lot of the spam bots.

Let me know if you notice any problems.
