• At age 15, Richard Newman Brackett enters Davidson College and receives his A.B. degree there in 1883. He will serve as one of Clemson Agricultural College's original faculty as associate professor of chemistry, beginning in 1891.
• August 14: Thomas Green Clemson executes the final draft of his last will and testament that establishes the provisions for the creation of what will become the Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina.
