Henry Simms Hartzog

Henry Simms Hartzog, LL.D., was Clemson's third president, serving from 1897 until 1902. He was elected by the Board of Trustees at their meeting on September 15, 1897. (The Clemson College Chronicle, October 1897, Volume I, Number 1, page 32.) The end of his tenure in the office was marked by turmoil, culminating in the first student walk-out, in March and April 1902.

Dr. Hartzog, a native of Barnwell, South Carolina, was a graduate of The Citadel and of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with an honorary doctorate from Mercer University.
