1922 in Clemson History

Events that occurred in 1922:

  • April 22: Athletic events are held by the Piedmont Oratorical and Athletic Association. A document from this event is preserved in a scrapbook by Cadet William Fletcher Welch of Clio, South Carolina, class of 1925, now in Special Collections at the Strom Thurmond Institute.
  • July 1: Clemson Agricultural College receives its first state appropriations from general funds - $90,856.66.
  • September 30: Football season opens as Clemson loses to Centre, 0-21, at Riggs Field. Clemson holds its first official Homecoming.
  • October 7: Clemson crushes Newberry College, 57-0, in second home game of the season.
  • October 13: The Tigers blank Presbyterian College, 13-0, in third Clemson home game of the year.
  • October 19-October 25: The 5th Southern Textile Exposition is held at Textile Hall in Greenville, South Carolina. A document from this event is preserved in the scrapbook of Cadet John Murphy Cook of Fort Mill, South Carolina, class of 1924, in the Special Collections at the Strom Thurmond Institute.
  • October 26: Clemson eakes out win, 3-0, over the University of South Carolina in annual Big Thursday match at the state fair in Columbia.
  • October 28: A new stadium is completed in the Arroyo Seco section of Pasadena, California, and on this date it hosts its first match, a football game between California and the University of Southern California. Sportswriter Harlan "Dusty" McClure calls the new stadium the "Rose Bowl" and the name sticks. The first "Rose Bowl" post-season game will be played there the following January 1st.   • November 4: The Rambling Wreck takes down the Tigers in Atlanta, 7-21, as Georgia Tech defeats Clemson.
  • November 11: Clemson defeats the Citadel in Charleston, 18-0.
  • November 18: Clemson shuts out Erskine College at Riggs Field, 52-0. Erskine will win no games this season, going 0-8.
  • November 25: The Tigers lose to Furman, 6-20, in game played in Greenville.
  • December 2: Clemson loses final game of the football season to the University of Florida, 14-47, in a game played in Jacksonville, Florida. Clemson finishes with a 5-4 record.
  • December 25: William S. Morrison, first professor of history and political economy at Clemson Agricultural College, serving since July 1893, dies this date. (Commemorative marble tablet in Tillman Auditorium)
